Multilateralism in Action

Dear IO/UNS Community,

On Sunday, the United Nations turns 76. To celebrate this key event in the history of global cooperation, SIPA is launching a new blog called Multilateralism in Action.

Multilateralism in Action provides a platform for cutting-edge discussions on international organizations and global governance. Leading experts in both practice and research provide insights into the determinants, modalities, and outcomes of multilateralism at the global, regional, national, and local levels.

Think pieces engage with the work of international organizations in all of today’s major challenges, such as climate action, human rights, peace, security, humanitarian relief, sustainable development, gender, technology, youth, health, migration and displacement - to name just a few. The blog features news from the world of the UN, international financial institutions, regional organizations, and also key insights from academic research.

Please join our new blog mailing list, share this news with your networks and engage with our blog announcement thread on Twitter.

Before we get to our great inaugural blog posts:

  • Please also remember to stop by in front of the fishbowl on the 4th floor today, from 2-4pm and celebrate UN Day. We have a raffle, a photo booth, cool IO/UNS swag, and coffee and snacks to grab&go. We'd love to see you!
  • Please share with us: How do you envision the perfect International Organization & UN Studies Program? Imagining the "ideal" IO/UNS program, what would you like to see? And what do you think about creating foreign language courses on international affairs? We'd be grateful if you could share your ideas and preferences with us here.

But now, without further delay, we are excited to launch the blog with three critical think-pieces:

In Framing Global Health Diplomacy at the Heart of International Cooperation and Multilateralism, Dr. Ibrahim Mayaki, CEO of the African Union Development Agency (NEPAD) and former Prime Minister of Niger, addresses the need for renewed global and multilateral commitments to overcome the vaccine disparity. Building on the emerging African Medicine Agency, Africa CDC and the progressive operationalization of the African Continental Free Trade Area, Mayaki makes a plea for leveraging pan-African and global cooperation to advance equitable global vaccine distribution.

In Dear Power, Book a Ride to a More Equitable World for All Generations, Jayathma Wickramanayake, the UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth and Bianca Herzog and Maanishaa Jessani from the UN Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, make a case for meaningful and diverse youth engagement, defined by shared power and co-ownership, building on the UN’s first-ever systemwide Youth Strategy, Youth2030, that promotes giving meaningful youth voices for a more equitable world for all generations.

In The United Nation’s Role in Combating Racism and Discrimination: 7 Recommendations for Greater Effectiveness, recent SIPA graduates Minji Ko, Sanskruti Majmudar, Laura McCreedy, and Amanda Waldron draw on their research from a semester-long capstone consultancy with the International Peace Institute to make seven recommendations how the United Nations could play an even more effective role to combat racism and racial discrimination.

New think-pieces with fresh views on NATO-UN peacekeeping cooperation, integrated development planning at UNDP, careers at the IOM, the legal status of environmental migrants, climate change governance, UN peace mediation, and other issues are coming out soon. Please join our new mailing list here to not miss out on our updates about new blog pieces.

Please share this news with your networks and engage with our blog announcement thread with multiple tweets.

If you are interested in writing a blog post, learn more about the submission guidelines here.

We hope you find our content engaging and we look forward to joint discussions on the practice of multilateralism.
